Malibu Sharks Win San Diego Lions Tourney

Sharks baseball needed and earned two wins Thursday to claim their first San Diego Lions Tournament championship in school history.

The Malibu Sharks defeated Sweetwater High School and High Tech High School in route to their first ever San Diego Lions Tournament championship.

The Sharks were 3-0 entering the final day of the championships Thursday and had to get past Sweetwater High, of National City, Calif. to get to the tournament championship game.

Malibu pitchers senior Riley Mcmillin and junior Chase Lambert were able to hurl a 3-0 shutout to advance to the finals.

Mcmillin went 5 2/3 innings of three hit shutout ball before giving way to Lambert to strike out the final four hitters of the game to earn the save.

Lambert has now struck out 41 hitters in 17 1/3 innings of work this year.

The Sharks would get all the offense they would need from sophomore Bronson Bard who opened the scoring in the first inning with a hard RBI single to left. Bard ended up 9-17 with seven RBI's in the tournament.

Senior Alvaro "Alvie" Alvarado continued his great tournment by singling and scoring another Sharks run on an RBI by Lambert. Alvarado went 9-for-18 with six doubles, six RBIs, five runs scored and three stolen bases in the tournment to help lead the Sharks.

Lambert also scorerd another Sharks run by a sac fly by sophmore Austin George and the 3-0 victory put Malibu in the finals

The championship game featured the Sharks against High Tech High of San Diego, and Malibu pitchers tossed another shutout to earn the tournament championship.

Junior Noah Simon pitched three shutout innings before giving the ball to junior Miles Tade who pitched the final three shutout innings securing the championship for the Sharks.

Simon improved his record to 5-0 on the year and Tade had his second impressive outing of the tournament.

Malibu scored 14 runs behind multiple hit games  from Lambert, George, and freshman Ezra Allen. Bard was also 1-for-2 with three walks and a hit by pitch.

Another highlight was freshman Tim Thomas' sharp single to center, his first hit of his varsity career, pinch hitting for his brother senior captain Frank Thomas V.

Lambert continued his impressive junior campaign by earning the 2013 Lions Tournament MVP. Lambert went 1-0 with one save and struck out 14 in 5 1/3 innings of relief pitching. Lambert also went 13-for-22 from the plate with six RBIs, six runs scored and six stoles bases in the tournment, which included a 5-5 game against Morse High.

Malibu went 5-0 in the tournament improvng their record for the season to 14-1.

The Sharks next games will be Friday, April 5, against Division-1 power Santa Monica High at Sharks Field.

The Sharks then finish the regular season with the final 10 all important conference games before CIF Playoffs begin.

The 14-1 start is the best in school history and they have won the championship of both tournaments they have played in this year. Keep up the great season boys!
