Malibu Teen Ran Malibu Triathlon For Fun, Dominates Anyway

The Malibu High School junior swims with the Malibu Seawolves and runs with the Malibu Cross Country Team.

Alec Wilimovsky took the top amateur spot at the Malibu Nautica Triathlon last weekend, beating out elite athletes -- all for fun.

Wilimovsky finished the race with a time of 1:23:17.86, putting him fourth overall in the competition. The only racers who did better were elite athletes Evan Kraus (1:20:52.58), Andrew MacNaughton (1:21:19.08) and Jonathan Toker (1:21:39.73).

The Malibu High School junior, who swims with the Malibu Seawolves and runs with the Malibu Cross Country Team, shares his athletic dreams with Malibu Patch:

Malibu Patch: How did you prepare for the Malibu Nautica Triathlon?

Alec: I train all year around my main race for this season was USAT Junior National Championships in Ohio back in August so this race was more just to have fun. I train anywhere from 18 to 25 hours a week depending if I'm racing or not. I run with my high school cross country team as well as swim with the Malibu Seawolves (the club run out of the high school pool). That's where I get the majority of my training done.

Malibu Patch: What brought you to sign up for the Malibu Triathlon?

Alec:  I have been racing triathlons for three years now and I have never raced it and being my home race a decide that I should probably be racing it.

Malibu PatCh: You finished the race incredibly fast. What was going through your mind toward the end? Did you have a sense you were going that fast?

Alec: Coming off the bike I knew that I was in third and that all I had to do was hold the position and I would be the top amateur over all. I knew it would be hard to catch the men in front of me but knowing they were all very good runners I just made sure not to be passed by anyone.

Malibu Patch: What are your goals in athletics? Do you want to join Team USA?

Alec:  I would love to someday compete for Team USA on the world circuit, or the Olympics, but for now my goals are just focusing on developing my self as an athlete and my main focus is still of draft legal junior races.
