Malibu 12-Year-Old Sixth in X Games Big Air Skateboarding Competition

Schaar was just five points behind champion Bob Burnquist of Brazil.

Twelve-year-old Tom Schaar of Malibu finished sixth Friday in Big Air skateboarding at the X Games, five points behind champion Bob Burnquist of Brazil.

Schaar received 89.33 points, the lowest score among the six finalists competing on Chick Hearn Court, between what organizers are dubbing the Event Deck atop the West Parking Garage and the Convention Center.

Burnquist won with 94.33 points in the 18-minute jam, followed by Mitchie Brusco of Encinitas, who had 93 and Nolan Munroe of Rindge, N.H., who had 91.

Jagger Eaton, an 11-year-old from Mesa, Ariz., the youngest athlete to compete in the X Games, was eliminated in Friday's semifinals. His 82.33 points put him last in his six-rider heat. His score was the lowest among the 12 semifinalists.

Ronnie Renner of Tampa, Fla. cleared a record 47 feet to win the Moto X Step Up at Staples Center. Matt Buyten of Minden Nev., the gold medalist each of the past two years who set the previous record of 37 feet in 2011, was second, clearing 46 feet. Brian Deegan of Bellevue, Neb., was third, clearing 39 feet.

Garrett Reynolds of Toms River, N.J. won his fifth consecutive X Games gold meal in BMX Freestyle Street. Reynolds had a spill off the wall in the second round, but had a flawless final run on the Event Deck at L.A. Live, landing a 540 Barspin Wallride he had missed previously, then nailed a Double-peg 270 onto the chain link fence, rotating his front wheel up and around to land hardway.

Just as his run time was about to expire, Reynolds took a tumble as he was coming off a picnic bench obstacle. Despite the fall, the judges determined his run was worthy enough for a score of 43.00 points, enough to give him a total score of 85.00, to finish two points ahead of Chad Kerley of San Diego.

"I did the same thing I've been doing every year,'' said Reynolds, the only athlete to ever win the event. "I just went out and did what I love to do.''

Kerley said he was "so beyond happy'' with his second-place finish.

"It's such a dream to be able to ride at the X Games,'' Kerley said. "I couldn't be any happier at how it turned out. I feel like I won. Garrett's the best on the planet, so I fell like I still won.''

Dakota Roche of San Diego was third with 69 points, beating on Jeremiah Smith of Cincinnati on a tiebreaker. Alexis Sablone of Brooklyn, N.Y. won the gold medal in women's Skateboard Street with 85.66 points. Leticia Bufoni of Brazil was second with 81 and Rachel Reinhard of Colorado Springs, Colo. was third with 80.33.

"I'm so relieved I can't even tell you,'' said Sablone, who also won the event in 2010. "Not because I won, but because I get really nervous before these things. But it's over and I did as well as I had hoped, so I'm pretty ecstatic.''

Jeremy Stenberg of Winchester won the Moto X Best Whip gold medal with 32 percent of the votes. Jarryd McNeil of Australia was second with 19 percent and Todd Potter of Temecula was third with 17 percent.
