Blog | Here They Come Again: The Light Monsters

Western Malibu needs lights like the ocean needs salt. Trancas Country Market and MMHS need to back off with their lighting plans.

As I stare out at Zuma from my bathroom window at 2 a.m., I see two tiny lights on two separate houses, but otherwise the expansive view is pitch black, save a gorgeous full moon. Stars are plentiful over the dark ocean.

But wait! We're heading full steam ahead into death by a thousand cuts. Trancas Country Market is asking the Malibu Planning Commission for 43 pole mounted lights, 12 to 20 feet tall.

According to "6 F" on the Planning Commission agenda set for Monday, October 1, at 6:30 pm, "Since the proposed lighting plan is significantly different than what currently exists on the site...concept plan indicates "the lighting for the TCM project is intended to provide safety, have a warm inviting quality (bring customers in) and give direction." The lighting concept plan further indicates that the goal was to keep the light levels as low as feasible in an effort to keep home owners at the local HOA (with roughly 250 families) happy...however, there will be some light spill from the light poles proposed within the parking lot."

I almost forgot to mention item A. 2 - didn't the Commission already say no to this? The Malibu High School Campus Improvement Project requests reconfigured 119-space lighted parking lot...and a reconfigured 61-space lighted parking lot.

Do you see how this is death by a thousand cuts? First the football lights, then Trancas Market, then the High School parking lots ... and the beat goes on. Next thing you know, we'll look like the Civic Center at night.

Send your thoughts to the planning commission ASAP. No lights in western Malibu, but thanks for asking.

PS - I laughed when I read Item "6 E" on the same agenda where Erewhon Market wants to sell alcohol. President Tony Antoci said in an earlier Malibu Patch article, "... Anything we do is top of the line health wise."  Martini smoothies - yay!
