LA County Supervisor Talks Up Tsunami Preparedness for Malibu

Tsunamis - yes tsunamis and Malibu - check it out.

Remember where you were when the Japanese earthquake and tsunami hit? Social media was coming in fast and furious, and as with most emergencies, some information was correct and some not so much.

By the time the wave finally reached the Golden State, it had dissipated quite a bit.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp_jp5QIWzw

As a follow up, a great article on California and Malibu tsunamis (OK not really but sort of Malibu) was written recently by LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. It can be hard to find real facts on staying safe, so it’s great that an official gives us good information that we can believe in. The main point of the article is that a tsunami triggered from a far away event like Chile or Japan poses relatively little risk, but we should be more concerned about an Alaskan quake.

It’s interesting that officials are hard at work on a “model” for 2013 that will depict how such a tsunami would affect the region economically, environmentally and as an emergency response challenge. Better hang tight till then...

In the meantime, don’t wait to hear a tsunami siren because they are few and far between. Instead, register your cell phone number and e-mail address with Alert L.A.  And follow those tsunami signs because we don’t want to get stuck in a dead end like Trancas.

Oh and one more thing. Check it out… .  One of the foremost speakers about tsunamis will be there!

Vendors of emergency preparedness solutions and equipment will be there too, as well as representatives from Los Angeles County Fire Department, Sheriff's Department, CHP, the National Weather Service and more.
