Malibu Spelled Backward Is Apathy

What happened to you, people? 

We had a wonderful Emergency Expo Saturday, orchestrated by our own Brad Davis, Malibu's Emergency Services Coordinator Extraordinaire, with lots of stuff to save you and your house in an emergency. The only people who showed up were the ones who already know how to save themselves and their homes ... emergency workers, CERT members and some City Council reps—even many city commissioners were MIA! 

Seriously - more than 1,400 of you received my email, notices were in all the papers and on Malibu Patch, many flyers were distributed and there was even a sign on PCH. 

I'm pretty sure that if we had a fire last week, all of you would have shown up. You missed a very knowledgeable Fire Department expert on how to protect your home with awesome footage of the Corral Fire that terrified me, a tsunami expert, a weather expert, fire product experts—and the list goes on. Free magnets, bags and informational packets were sitting on tables waiting for new homes and eyeballs to no avail. 

Well, at the first smell of smoke, many of you probably will be lined up to buy fire-proof gel, fire hoses, "go kits" and other stuff you could have learned about yesterday. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water...
