Blog: The Great Malibu Chicken Rescue

Chickens run wild in Malibu and on Pacific Coast Highway. Please adopt.

While some of you watched the debate and others of you went to the city council meeting, Marshall Thompson, Mari Stanley, Skyler Ficklin and I were rescuing chickens. We got a call from neighbors Jeffrey and Tina Pease about 5:30 p.m. that five hens and a rooster were loose on PCH at Westward Beach.

I just got home from dance class and was pooped and in no mood to rescue anything, but Marshall insisted. California Wildlife Foundation declined because these are not wild animals and Agoura Shelter declined to help because the chickens "could fly away." Unacceptable. Who could help us? We do turtles and tortoises, and they are a lot easier to catch.

So we drove over to the location, and Marshall put on his CERT safety vest. We called our friend and chicken expert, Mari Stanley, and Marshall kept the little buggers from becoming chicken fricassee on the highway until she arrived.

I called the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station because this little group could cause an accident running on the highway. Mari drove up with blankets and a cat carrier in hand. We had two empty wine boxes ourselves that we brought along. Out of the blue came Skyler Ficklin, our 19 year old animal loving friend (son of Ron Ficklin who did our turtle pond) who takes care of our goats and sheep and turtles. He became a chicken hero par excellence. Two sheriff cars showed up too which helped with lighting and all six adorable creatures were rescued thanks to Mari and Skyler in the bushes with blankets. Kristy's Restaurant helped too - the staff was concerned and they donated boxes.

Now we have some wonderful animals that either someone dumped or lost. We'd like to hear from you if you want to adopt. Email susan@tellemgrodypr.com.  Cluck Cluck.
