Now This is Commuting

It has been five months since my husband and I made our ten-year dream of moving to Malibu a reality. In fact, we didn’t give it a second thought when the opportunity presented itself. Malibu was always first on our list for a relaxing getaway from the Bay Area. Favorite spots like Paradise Cove, Howdy’s and Nobu would now be in our backyard. Not to mention, the amazing beach we’d spent so many hours enjoying would be a stone’s throw away.

I remember the reaction when I told people we would be living in Malibu, but working in Santa Monica – a sheer look of terror followed by the words, “That commute!” I immediately thought back to the days of bumper-to-bumper traffic on 101 in San Jose, only to be followed by stop-and-go traffic on Lawrence Expressway. It could take me up to an hour to drive 12 miles. I’d call that commuting.

But this morning as we drove to work, I looked to my right and was silenced by the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. Sure, we were driving 20 miles an hour, but how can you complain when you get to start your day watching the sun rise over the water? Many occurrences have become part of our daily routine – the birds diving into the ocean, the guy who sets up his drums in a nearby parking lot, and the lights flashing on the Santa Monica pier as you make the final turn onto the 10.

The best part? I get to sightsee the entire time. Scouting out restaurants has almost become a hobby and our list of places to try is a mile long.

Sunrises, waves crashing and endless rows of charming restaurants? If this is commuting, sign me up.
