Malibu Surfing Association to Host Classic Weekend

Legendary surfer Simon Anderson, who is the inventor of the Thruster three-finned surfboard, will also be competing in the SurfAid Cup, which is set for Saturday.

More than 300 surfers from clubs around the world will convene on First Point at Surfrider Beach in Malibu this weekend for the Malibu Surfing Association's MSA Classic Invitational.

The event is set for Sept. 7-9. The MSA Classic is an event with a long tradition that goes back to 1963, according to MSA President Michael Blum.

The SurfAid International and the SurfAid Cup Malibu, which involves eight teams each fundraising for SurfAid, is set for Saturday, Sept. 8.

Each team will be captained by a professional surfer, including: three-time ASP world champion Tom Curren, four-time ASP women's world champion Lisa Andersen, 1976 world champion Peter Townend, 1977 world champion Shaun Tomson, and Courtney Conlogue, who is currently rated number four on the ASP Women's World Championship Tour.

The teams include: Team WindanSea, Malibu Mavericks, Kaiser Permanente, Malibu Surf Council, The Frank-N-Riders, Surfaiders, The Riehle Good Surfers, and ZJ and Company.

Legendary surfer Simon Anderson, who is the inventor of the Thruster three-finned surfboard, will also be competing in the SurfAid Cup, according to a report from Surf Transworld.

In addition, the Board Art Benefit for SurfAid will be held on Sept. 7-8 at the Quiksilver Store in the Malibu Lumberyard.

Twenty boards will be shown from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

...or an annual malibu locals only holiday where the beach is ours and ours exclusively for one day every year. maybe some local bands, bonfires...

Ignoring? You mean like ignoring the failing beach grades 50 yrds east of the pier? Why does Malibu still practice third world septic policies when we have millions of beach goers leaving their feces and urine in our geology every month? It is not possible for the current beach front residents to continue injecting 80 years of human waste into beach front geology without detrimental consequences to public health issues let alone 1.5 million beach visitors leaving their feces and urine in our ground water. Whether we like it or not we need sewers AND we need to control commercial growth. That being said, this could be my last post here on PATCH since my combined voice, one that is in complete sync ( and in a personal relationship with ) with a banned former PATCH user ( reasons never given yet when we were the subject of "news" that benefited PATCH it was ok ) is not apparently a valid and intelligent enough of a viewpoint to reinstate his voice. However, personal attacks, fake names and threats of violence are entirely o.k. - so carry on.

If MSA had a hand in doing to Little Dume what has happened at the lagoon I'm sure you would feel the same way. As a surf shop owner, I feel that you should have been more protective of the wave at Malibu, or at the very least tried to really find out what was going to happen. Not sure you have even gotten out of your car to go look at the mess down there as you drive by everyday. It's great to save the world , but what about your own backyard? Maybe I should be praising Bob Morris and his restaurant at Paradise Cove for all the good that he brings to your neighborhood ??

Hey can I come to the locals only party. How long do you have to live in Malibu to be a local. Gee I wish I was a local, but everytime I go surfing everyone is a d*ck. Surfers should learn from skaters who are always cool to strangers. Lets face it, this locals only attitude is racism, and shameful. So sad that a beautiful place like Malibu is so full of this prejicsim to outsiders. People of Malibu should shun Malibu locals only Racists, otherwise you are an accomplice. Grow up. So funny to read the patch and see so many Malibu locals brazenly spewing out racism, localism, .. even against the Chumash who are the real locals.

sean, ...so you are cool with malibu beach being closed for a bunch of contests all summer, but having one "locals only" day seems unreasonable? ...and how can you be so sure that the people that are d*cks to you are even from malibu? anyways, there will be a huge rager at the malibu inn on the 20th, and there will be hundreds of locals. why dont you see if you can make some new friends?
