Malibu Surfing Association to Host Classic Weekend

Legendary surfer Simon Anderson, who is the inventor of the Thruster three-finned surfboard, will also be competing in the SurfAid Cup, which is set for Saturday.

More than 300 surfers from clubs around the world will convene on First Point at Surfrider Beach in Malibu this weekend for the Malibu Surfing Association's MSA Classic Invitational.

The event is set for Sept. 7-9. The MSA Classic is an event with a long tradition that goes back to 1963, according to MSA President Michael Blum.

The SurfAid International and the SurfAid Cup Malibu, which involves eight teams each fundraising for SurfAid, is set for Saturday, Sept. 8.

Each team will be captained by a professional surfer, including: three-time ASP world champion Tom Curren, four-time ASP women's world champion Lisa Andersen, 1976 world champion Peter Townend, 1977 world champion Shaun Tomson, and Courtney Conlogue, who is currently rated number four on the ASP Women's World Championship Tour.

The teams include: Team WindanSea, Malibu Mavericks, Kaiser Permanente, Malibu Surf Council, The Frank-N-Riders, Surfaiders, The Riehle Good Surfers, and ZJ and Company.

In addition, the Board Art Benefit for SurfAid will be held on Sept. 7-8 at the Quiksilver Store in the Malibu Lumberyard.

Twenty boards will be shown from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
