On World Turtle Day, Groupon Features Malibu Nonprofit

The Hospital Renovation campaign is available on the Los Angeles Groupon Grassroots page starting Thursday, May 23 and running through May 29.

In honor of World Turtle Day, Groupon Grassroots will help raise funds for repairs to the American Tortoise Rescue turtle hospital in Malibu.

The partnership was announced Thursday as part of the 13th annual World Turtle Day, which was created to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. (Access the link here.)

Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson launched American Tortoise Rescue 23 years ago to provide a sanctuary for abandoned and disabled reptiles. They have rehomed more than 3,000 turtles and tortoises in the past 22 years.

“World Turtle Day was started 13 years ago to increase respect and knowledge for the world’s oldest creatures," Tellem said. "We are thrilled that Groupon is joining with us to fund this dream come true project as we have been limping along in a makeshift way housing and caring for ill animals for about 15 years.”

The Hospital Renovation campaign is available on the Los Angeles Groupon Grassroots page starting Thursday, May 23 and running through May 29.

Support can be pledged in increments of $10 for the renovating the hospital with tanks for sick and injured turtles and tortoises. Each additional $10 donation will go toward paint, flooring, furniture and storage for medical supplies and books, as well as veterinary care through the Rosie Fund.
