Secondary Poisoning .... Opps, Who's Eating that Rodent ?

Why not to use chemical poisons

At California Wildlife Center , it seems always there are so many beautiful birds of prey and or mammals suffering from secondary toxicity from eating poisoned rodents. CWC’s , vet , staff and volunteers try so hard to save them ..and it is heartbreaking to watch how they suffering.
And so I wanted to share some Information from Dr. McMIllin, a vet with CADFG (Calif, Agri, Dept, Fish, & Game)
, who wrote;
“I always recommend non-chemical rodent control first, with the most
permanent solution being habitat modification - so sealing entrances into
the house, etc. And then other non-chemical means such as trapping (and relocating). I
have heard mixed reviews of electronic and ultrasonic traps but snap traps
can work in a lot of cases.

So, having said that, the best options for chemical control are the acute
poisons - the ones that kill the rodents immediately and do not have the
tendency to cause secondary toxicity (in predator’s such as raptors etc). These would be bromethalin and
cholecalciferol, with bromethalin being more widely available. You still
need to make sure the bait is only accessible to the target pest and not
any non-target wildlife, domestic animal, or child.
If all could see the pain in the eyes of an owl that ate a poisoned rodent ..so many would never use poison again.
