I wasn't in attendance but my friends say it was a bit more like a roast with comments about moms…Read More and their Prozac and the dads with their 25 year old honeys and enough expletives to make Sam Kinison proud.Apparently after 20 minutes of shock and awe he made some very important points as mentioned above. Can someone post a video so we can see it for ourselves? It sounds very borderline for a principal who is taking enough critique for other reasons.

A speech celebrating education should be eloquent at the very minimum. Using the vocabulary of a…Read More teenage boy is just the lazy, cheap, tacky and ultimately, easy way out. Would any of the MHS teachers have accepted that as an assignment? It was an embarrassing representation of the school. Mr Shadyac is quoted as saying "He wanted to speak to the kids" but unfortunately all of us were forced to listen. If Mr. Block was so insistent that Mr. Shadyac share his words of "wisdom" it should have been at the senior dinner when only the students were present. Not little kids to whom I now must explain that some adults are just selfish, self centered ego maniacs who don't understand the word "appropriate" or understand the concept of time and place.

I'm sure I would have laughed had I been there. However I agree with LL Time and Place is…Read More everything. Pretty funny stuff, but not right for all families and all kids.
Too bad for the people who objected, who will now be seen as unhip and prudish.
To be oblivious to who makes up your entire audience, and then proceed regardless, is supreme narcissism, in my humble opinion.
Sandra Peltola June 10, 2013 at 07:39 pm
I know why Oaks Christian has banned Shadyac from speaking publicly at their school. His jokes were…Read More insulting and lewd; not material for a graduation speech. I am surprised the administration allowed his line of humor and cursing. Not a good example of public speaking, best to keep that in a bar or comedy club. Conservative? Yes.

The ceremony was anything but conventional which is exactly what we are in Malibu. The graduates…Read More all seemed to enjoy the beautiful day and the families and friends gathered were proud to watch as another group of talented and generous group of Malibu kids take the next step in life. Thank you to all the parents and supporters of Malibu High for a wonderful event.
Seth Jacobson June 11, 2013 at 06:52 am
The individualism and courage the seniors showed is indicative of the strength and openess of our…Read More community. Let's remember why we have this event, not for the parents, or the grandparents, its for the kids that are taking a big next step in their lives. It was wonderfully put together by the parents and school, it was a true example of why we are a unique community that cherishes individualism and services. I am proud to have been there, to have participated and to have a graduate of the Class of 2013.

This is going to be a great event! Phil and Lore have been incredible members of this community!…Read More Everyone is welcome! Overflow parking is at Pepperdine off Seaver Drive.

Phil and Lore I am sorry to miss this happy and sad event. I will miss you next Halloween when I…Read More come to pick up the candy for the homeless. Walking into the office will not be the same. Sad to see you retire, but happy to see you retire. I have some great cruises I can send you on :):) Linda, Bill,

Does this mean we don't have to have a ticket to watch the graduation?

Malibu is a pretty small town and this girl is obviously a special athlete. I wish you the very best…Read More in the pursuit of your goals. I also admire that you haven't been lured away to a "track and field school" though I am sure the opposing coaches are plotting a way to get your talent. congratulations.
Jessica E. Davis (Editor) May 26, 2013 at 11:04 pm
I agree. Caroline is a very special athlete. Congrats! Go Sharks!
Henry Holmes May 23, 2013 at 10:06 am
Congrats on a great year and league championship. You guys are a credit to Malibu. You got the…Read More community rocking.

My friend Lori and I started Topanga Vintage Market because we have a passion for flea markets and…Read More it has been one of my best "jobs" ever! This seminar is so great for the kids! bravo.

simply amazing that special education for the handicaped has been told it has to cut its budget by…Read More $493,000. Exactly what the lights cost. where are your priorities?
while some will get to play football under the lights are special needs students have been asked to sacrifice even more. not only should the city counsel be totally embarrased but some of our citizens should hang their heads in shame

When my son graduated from MHS, it was ranked #98 in the country by U.S. News and World Report. Now…Read More it's at #365. What a sad day for the students, teachers, and educators of MHS, and our entire community.
I'm sure that the students are as intelligent as they were back when my son attended, so what has changed?
- The number of AP courses that MHS offers has declined.
- Fewer students now take the AP exams.
There's alot of negative talk about the football team's night lights. Alot of hullaballoo for a football team playing in Division XIII (or is it XVI), the bottom of all school sports leagues. While it's wonderful for the school families to have a place of community to watch the football games, the school appears to have forgotten its main purpose and once glorious roots.
If the school, its administrators, its students, and the Shark Fund might focus equally as well on the academics as it does on its football team, MHS might have a good chance at remembering and recapturing its once solid academic standing.
I never thought I'd plug an independent school district, but I like the ideas and numbers -- and now it looks like if we want our kids to be well-educated, we need an independent school district -- instead of one driven by the SANTA MONICA/malibu Unified School District. This particular school is being badly driven by Santa Monica. It's time for Malibu to recapture ownership and make Malibu High great again, for our students.
Marianne Riggins May 6, 2013 at 10:27 am
I encourage everyone in the community to attend one of the showings at MHS, you will be blown away…Read More by the talent of the theater program.

Thank you Jo Ruggles-Right on! A unifying architectectural theme based on our early history-we have…Read More been fighting for this for the past two decadessss, with the support of the community also approved by Coastal and County Supervisors who conditioned this theme be used in the Cross Creek development. Sadly, this was not considered by the powers that be. We continue the fight for a unifying theme based on the Spanish colonial style of the Adamson House. We have another chance to make this happen with the passing of the $14 million MTA grant provided City Staff cooperates and we are given a fair chance. This did not happen with the Parks and Rec review which emphasized wrongly phase ! (the most expensive part of a- 4 phase project which is a promenade , a walking system connecting central Malibu with a unifying theme(Spanish Colonial-using the same design of the pilasters, the wall at Surfrider Beach and the Malibu tiles.-call me if you want more info and thanks for your voice -it helps a great deal!

Mr. Perry is a Malibu treasure!
His A.P. biology class several years ago -- with an emphasis on…Read More marine biology -- catapulted my eldest daughter way ahead of her college classes. She ended up at the University of Bonn, where she just got her m.a. in marine biology.
Malibu High launched my three daughters in three widely different directions -- biology, architecture, music -- each of them deeply influenced and encouraged by tough, caring, inspiring teachers.

Tom, I appreciate your feelings regarding the changes at Malibu High, but there may be several…Read More facts that you are not considering. First the original restrictions that were placed on the school were done with very little if any public input. Second, despite coastal staff recommendation the Coastal Commission in 2009 voted to not remove the restrictions, stating the LCP didn't allow night lighting when in fact it did not prohibit night lighting at Public recreation areas. Third, in addition to being our local public school, it is also one of the areas identified in the General Plan for community recreation. Fourth, you state that you feel that not enough time has been spent on finding a compromise, but over the last four years + one side has stated their position is No lights, how do you find a compromise when No is the begin, middle and end? The lights that were installed are the most state of the art, offering protection to the neighbors both human and wild from glow, glare and spill. The height of the poles is necessary in order to focus the light onto the field and I can speak from first hand experience of being on the track and I was still able to see stars in the sky. Please understand that the supportors of the lights understand the impact on the neighborhood, but the neighborhood needs to understand the benefit to 1000's of Malibu residents.

Marianne-
Of course I respect your opinion, but feel I need to respond. You say the original…Read More restrictions were enacted with little public input, when in fact they were put in place by a very inclusive process-- when it was proposed that a school and field be placed on this site, in consideration to the existing community, it was decided no lights like this would ever be constructed. I discovered this ten years ago when I was deciding whether to buy on the point or Malibu Park and got legal assurance. As to the rest of your points, perhaps you were not present at the Council meetings where I stated my love of football and night games. I have never been a "no lights" advocate, and there are many of us affected that have always been open to a common sense solution. Unfortunately, I've seen my friends and neighbors polarized into a bitter "all of nothing" war. Those most against the lights are long time residents who have had their views literally obliterated by the poles - never mind when the lights on are on. With some exceptions of course, the majority of pro-lights people are those with student-athletes who don't live within view. What I am urging for is, rather than the looking back with bitterness over the past four years (as you do in your response), that BOTH SIDES make the final minor adjustments (i.e. poles coming down for part of the year, etc.) that finally put this issue to rest. TB
Marianne Riggins March 26, 2013 at 10:54 am
Tom, I wanted to clarify, it is not bitterness, but frustration that is part of my post.…Read More Misinformation continues to be discussed with regards to the lights. I am sorry you were given assurances that lights would never be a part of this field. The restrictions of use of this field were placed on it in 2000, many decades after Malibu Park Jr High and the main field were built. The main field has been a location for community recreation and the play of football and other sports since at least the 70’s. The restriction of use were not discussed or agreed upon by the community and since this site is a community public school it is my opinion that the community as a whole should have had input. The General Plan identifies this site as a location for community recreation, something the members of this community have enjoyed for decades. I thank you for having an open mind regarding the use of lights, unfortunately many have been strongly opposed to finding any type of compromise.

Look who the key player was in the then, and now City dis-involvement. Who got staff to look the…Read More other way, who worked from within the agency that was supposed to be impartially evaluating the expansion project protecting the safety of the public using the street to use the street itself as the student drop-off zone, who "cut the ribbon", whose kid wanted to park on Morning View Drive? Why did the SMMUSD's proposed round-a-bout in the middle of a public street (that had no intersecting public streets) BYPASS the PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION and go straight to a City vote? Again, biased public officials infiltrating the independent regulatory body. We MUST do better in the future -- for all "sides" because these delays, and lawyers, have cost Malibu children millions of dollars directly, and in future debt, for the misdeeds of the SMMUSD and their consultants, political operatives, and the co-opted public supporters bent on manipulating and subverting established public processes designed to expose and thwart greed, injustice, and trickery.

Congratulations Malibu! Our schools are our heart, and I am glad to hear that an equitable…Read More compromise was reached that seems to have made most parties feel whole. An arduous process indeed, but one that seems to have been adroitly handled by staff and the Commission. Again, congratulations to all.

Of course she did!!! Mrs. Chi is AMAZING! I can't say enough good things about her. Her Coffee…Read More with the Counselor sessions and College Nights are so informative. The way she helps MHS students break down the crazy college application process, makes it manageable. So proud of Mrs. Chi! She is yet another great reason to have your kids attend Malibu High.
PJ Manney March 18, 2013 at 12:23 pm
Mrs. Chi is a fabulous woman and one of the greatest assets MHS and the Malibu community have! Our…Read More family is just one of many that love her. She guides both children and parents in the most grounded, calming, informative way and MHS has seen a real improvement in college acceptances during her tenure. Congratulations to Ah Young Chi!

You attended one meeting? W O W, H O W V E R Y S P E C I A L. It was a five-or-six year…Read More process for those of us who spent the time constructively, instead of carping.
We -- not just me, a whole bunch of people -- worked very hard on getting parking off MVD, at the request of the neighbors. We also had to fight the district to dampen their terrible institutional security lights.
We succeeded, and you just can't stand the fact that some people worked within the system to strengthen our public school, reduce lighting spill, and get stalled cars off MVD. We won, and yet the published vitriol from you is remarkable.
You really think schools shouldn't have tennis courts or a pool, open to the public? Oh my God, the school has a basketball court (open to the public)! And a theater!
Your comments reveal what you think of your fellow Malibu residents, who work very hard and take great pride in our school system, and OUR CHILDREN.

They maybe trying to console us with lights on 10 ft. polls with motion detectors, on the parking on…Read More the ridge but they have better plans for in front of my house. The lot west of the pool. There they plan on putting up 18 ft. polls with lights that will be on until 11:00 pm. some of the time and a little less other times.
The camel got its nose under the tent.
