Ms. White should pay a little more attention to the way things really are.....not just live in aRead More dreamland where things have no relationship to other things. The Politicians in Los Angeles are allowing it's destruction, and in many cases encouraging it. I have no idea why, but the facts of the matter speak clearly for the inaction we have to witness and pay for the consequences of. Check History. Hit and Run Accidents have increased dramatically...WHY? There are no consequences.

The best action one can take to greatly reduce one's water footprint at the individual level is toRead More adopt a plant-based diet. By far, animal agriculture uses the most water in California. Taking shorter showers and adopting other actions to save water is great, don't get me wrong, but a drop in the bucket compared to the water-intensive meat and dairy industries. The world's leading water scientists met at the International Water Institute in Stockholm, and concluded that if we want there to be enough water to meet everyone's needs as our world's population expands to 9 billion and more droughts are predicted, then the world must shift to a plant-based diet. It takes 4000 gallons of water for a day's worth of food for a meat-centered diet, but only 300 gallons for a plant-based/vegan diet. Please think about it and choose water-wise, plant-based foods.

Some good ideas posted above, some really bad. Building a pipeline from the Midwest WOULD NOTRead More address the environmental degradation that is now under way in CA. And let's understand the concept of POSITIVE FEEDBACK mechanisms in environmental/ climate science. Basically, the hotter it gets, the less precip we receive. The less precip we receive, the drier it gets. The drier it gets, the more trees die. The more trees die, the more fires we get. The more fires we get, the hotter it gets and so on and so on . . . The time for action on climate change was 20-30 years ago. CO2 levels are too high now, and half life in the atmosphere is 100 freaking years.

All the while the Calif. State, County and Local Governments are trying to charge more for water,Read More penalize us millions of dollars for not conserving Even More than we already have! And...now they want to add at least one-half million dollars in new homes and units with taxpayer dollars to fund for low income housing in Los Angeles that will contribute considerably to the Water Shortage. SMMUSD Superintendent Sandra Lyon says that PEER and Malibu Unites are dismissive of a governmentRead More agency's authority. In fact, it is SMMUSD that has been dismissive of the EPA's authority. Jared Blumenfeld of the EPA clearly stated in a Q&A with parents on campus that all PCBs in excess of 50ppm must be removed, per Federal mandate, yet the current Environ plan calls for management in place for up to 15 years. A letter from the EPA to SMMUSD back in December clearly stated that air testing should be done with windows closed, yet Mark Katchen tested about half of the initial classrooms with doors and windows open, which dilutes the concentration of PCBs in the air. SMMUSD also deemed it unnecessary to inform any regulatory agencies, parents, or teachers about the discovery of PCBs and eight other contaminants in MHS soil in 2009, or about its removal in 2011. Who's dismissing what here? PEER and Malibu Unites are not dismissive of a government agency's authority. They are acting in response to SMMUSD's abuse of authority.
Cheryl Torrey July 22, 2014 at 07:39 pm
This is ludicrous what Sandra Lyons is saying, If she was so concerned she would have followedRead More through on all the promises made back in October. Stating she would be informing parents and do immediate testing and anyone concerned they would have their child tested. None of this has been done. No amount of health concern is worth a wait and see attitude. Wether she wants to state that she is governed by EPA standards or not its wrong and for her to side with injustice to somehow protect the image of the SMMUSD just shows they are fearful of parents in outrage over this and have something to hide. Malibu is a strong savvy and educated community and we are not about to let some bureaucracy tell us what's OK or not. We will get the answers if they do not want to provide them. These are our children, our teachers and our schools we are talking about. The future of Malibu. We need to deal with the issue at hand and clean up the schools. Prop BB money has long been appropriated/earmarked for this specifically because this school was built between 1950-1979. So just do the right thing. Enough already. Does SMMUSD have to loose all its students because parents will find alternatives rather than subject their children to hazardous conditions.

Jan Brewer Orders Full Review Of Drawn-Out Execution Reuters Posted: 07/23/2014 8:49 pm EDT Updated:Read More 07/23/2014 9:59 pm EDT Print Article ********************************************** Wait, we kill mainly for revenge because it is known that the death penalty does not deter crime and in fact is more expensive than prison for life. We are nuts to put people to death but worry about the compassion of how this death is administrated! Somewhere I read "thou shall not kill" but never said it alright to kill if you commit a horrible crime! It is also true that the experience of the death penalty has been that we have put innocent people to death! The problem with the death penalty including those cited above is that killing people makes us just as barbaric as these criminals especially when used just for revenge! Why do tough on crime love the death penalty? Is this a form of pandering like when Republicans pander to the Christian-Right that have us believe they are fighting for the unborn and fighting against the "immorality" of being Gay?

The future can be bright for anyone that is willing improve themselves to becoming more marketableRead More in the job market. Cassandra Politzer Wiseman July 20, 2014 at 11:35 am
The SMMUSD Board Members and Superintendent Lyon have spent almost a million dollars since OctoberRead More on hiring Mark Katchen, a known anti-environmentalist, whose findings and testing were rejected by the EPA and Pillsbury, one of the most expensive law firms in the nation, to council them on our school's contamination case. Not one of the sick teachers or parents has hired a lawyer. All we have asked is for independent testing of the soil and classrooms so that we could do the tests properly after Katchen had the classrooms tested with the windows open and other shenanigans. According to school board minutes, SMMUSD CFO Jan Maez, BB project Architect Elaine Rene Weissman knew they had contaminated soil and chose to do the remediation without concern for the workers, who wore no protection or the classrooms full of teachers and students during summer school that were bordering the quad just inches away from the trenching. They even dumped the toxic soil in a nontoxic dump. Incompetence and malpractice and complete lack of leadership. Everything done wrong and no one at the SMMUSD wants to deal with it so they've chosen to cover it up instead. But the truth will out. It always does, ~12 teachers and 4 former students with thyroid disease; 1 bladder cancer; 3 teachers now retired who had melanoma cancer while at MHS; 1 pancreatic cancer; 1 retired teacher with colon cancer that moved to the brain; several teachers at MHS with reproductive issues and health issues of children that were carried to term on the MHS campus The 12 cases of thyroid disease in teachers include 3 with thyroid cancer (stage 1, diagnosed in the past 6 months), 6 teachers and the student with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and/or other thyroid problems over the past 3 years, and 3 teachers with nodules that must be examined every 4-6 months. The 3 teachers with thyroid cancer at MHS do not work in the same building on campus. But, the majority of the teachers with thyroid issues work in the main middle school building. The 4 cases of thyroid disease in former students include 1 former male MHS student, late 20s, who had thyroid cancer; 1 former male MHS student, late 20s, and 1 22-year-old former student (gender not specified), with thyroid disease; at least 1 former Cabrillo Elementary School student with thyroid cancer. MU and PEER are compiling more cases of disease among alumni and teachers who were not included in the description above. For example, there is also at least one instance of liver cancer in a former student at Cabrillo Elementary School. Cabrillo teachers seem of also have an elevated incidence of breast cancer, but I don't have numbers for you at this time. Our classrooms have the highest rate of PCBs in America but the soil was contaminated with chlordane, lead, ddts, ddes, tuolene, benzene, arsenic. More shocking to me as a parent has been Superintendent Sandra Lyon, Jan Maez and the rest of the school board's shameful attempts to brush it all under the rug and not test properly or remediate. They have chosen to spend almost a million of our tax dollars, the school districts' money, on hiring lawyers to protect themselves. Shameful.

When will everyone realize that government operations of nearly all stripes are incompetent? HowRead More long does the government take to do things, how good is the quality and how expensive is it? Any publicly traded company (or small business) would have been bankrupt long ago. But tax payers collectively end up paying for the worst most costly services in the country.
