The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is a state agency that acquires and preserves land in the Santa Monica Mountains,More including the Malibu portions and other areas. Through partnerships with other state and private agencies, the SMMC operates various parks created through these acquisitions. Joseph T. Edmiston has served as the SMMC's director since its inception in 1980. The SMMC board meets monthly at various locations. The state agency is headquartered at Ramirez Canyon Park in Malibu.
Solstice Canyon Park

Solstice Canyon Park features trails and natural surroundings, as well as a historical experience. The oldest home inMore Malibu, a 19th-century stone cottage built by Malibu pioneer Matthew Keller, can be viewed during a trail hike. The land was acquired for a park in 1988 by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, and has since been turned over to the National Park Service.
Ramirez Canyon Park

Ramirez Canyon Park is located on the former estate of Barbra Streisand, who donated the property to the Santa MonicaMore Mountains Conservancy in 1993. It serves as the headquarters for the state agency and features a variety natural features. At this time, the park is only open to the public by appointment. The California Coastal Commission recently approved a plan for overnight camping and private events at the park, but that plan is on hold following a lawsuit from the City of Malibu and local property owners.
