LA County Worker Threatened Over Malibu Lagoon Project

Two males in their 20s told the maintenance worker from the LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors that if he worked on the controversial Malibu Lagoon project he "will be wearing a toe tag."

A Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors maintenance worker was threatened last week by two men who mistook him for working on the Malibu Lagoon project.

The worker, who has been with the department for several years, was grooming the beach near Trancas in a tractor about 5:30 a.m. on Friday, June 1, which was expected to be the start of the project, said Carol Baker, public information officer for LA County Department of Beaches and Harbors.

"Two males basically asked him if he was going tp work at the Malibu Lagoon project. Our employee said he didn’t know. He was not aware of what was going on, because we have no involvement. So they said, 'If you are, you will be wearing a toe tag,'" Baker said.

The man went on with his work and later reported the incident to his supervisor, who prompted the worker to report it to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Detectives are investigating the incident, according to the sheriff's department.

The worker was not able to provide a very good description of the two men, Baker said.

“We’re concerned because we are out on the beaches everyday with our blue trucks and our tractor. We’re simply cleaning the beaches and making them safe for people to go to the beach,” Baker said.

She added that there are no plans for any Beach and Harbor staff to do any of the lagoon work.
