Zuma Beach Lifeguards Help in Take Down of Panga Boat

About two dozen bales of "suspected marijuana'' were retrieved from the panga and from the ocean near the boat about five miles southwest of Leo Carrillo State Beach.

Authorities Thursday arrested two men apparently trying to smuggle marijuana into the country from Mexico aboard a panga-style boat, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The arrests were made about 9 a.m. in the ocean about five miles southwest of Leo Carrillo State Beach, Coast Guard spokesman Adam Eggers said.

Zuma Beach lifeguards saw the boat in the ocean about 7 a.m. and notified authorities, Eggers said.

A Coast Guard helicopter and two Coast Guard boats were sent to the area, along with a sheriff's boat, and authorities stopped the suspects' boat after a nearly 30-minute pursuit, Eggers said.
